What started as a friendship more than 10 years ago, has become the foundation of our conservation trust.

After finishing school, Max travelled to Namibia for his first conservation placement, where he joined Kleopas and Christopher, two passionate young Namibians who protected rhinos and lead wildlife excursions. While spending days in the field tracking rhinos, they formed a strong team with a shared passion for wildlife 🦏

Sitting around the campfire one night, the three dreamed of a future where people and nature could coexist in harmony. This was the moment when the idea of founding a dedicated conservation NGO was born. Tragically, just two years later, Christopher passed away suddenly, leaving Kleopas, Max and their shared dreams behind.

Lagunas of Baja

🌿 The shallow lagoons and bays along the Pacific coast of Baja California are home to a natural wonderland. This surreal landscape boasts surprisingly high levels of aquatic and terrestrial species. The mangrove forests are at the heart of this ecosystem and play a significant role in global carbon sequestration and biodiversity.
We don’t always need technical, innovative solutions to combat climate change - nature already has the answers: we just have to protect and restore mangrove forests and the coastal ecosystems of which they are a part 🌱

To be able to protect and study species, we use different tools to try to understand them better - what do they need to survive? Where do they like to spend their time? - and camera traps are one of the many methods that allow us to capture information that can later guide conservation efforts. This particular method is especially useful to monitor elusive and nocturnal species, such as leopards or hyenas, but will capture anyone (including Max) who walks in front of the camera, leaving us sometimes with funny scenes (or the lack thereof, if you purposely avoid the camera like the kākā 🦜)

These photos were taken in Mexico, but we know that many parts of the world show a similar picture - plastic, glass and all kinds of inorganic materials taking over landscapes that once were natural.

With rising urbanisation and consumption, waste is increasing, and pollution has become one of the main drivers of global biodiversity loss: from the not so obvious particles discharged into air, water and soil to the food wrappings and soda bottles we know well, it all has an impact on our ecosystems and wildlife.

However, there are certain species that make the best out of the situation and adapt: among the waste piles, scavengers and raptors like the crested caracara find easy food sources in areas with high human populations, where prey number might have dicreased. It seems like a quick-fix, but at what cost?

On the search for the mountain ghost ⛰️

The Sierras of Mexico are a refuge for many different wildlife species, with mountains, canyons and rivers providing important habitats.
The #BajaCalifornia peninsula holds an unknown population of the elusive #puma (Puma concolor), also named as mountain lion or cougar. Pumas are keystone species and apex predators, that have a major impact on local ecosystems throughout the trophic cascade, maintaining the natural balance.
Like many wild cat species, pumas are notoriously shy and avoid most human contact, earning them the nickname ‘mountain ghosts’. However, ranchers in the Sierras of Baja occasionally encounter pumas, and human-wildlife conflicts occur when pumas prey on livestock such as goats. This usually happens when natural prey is scarce and human activities have encroached too much on natural systems. 🐆

@nakawe_project and @bajadventures work directly with landowners to offer opportunities to live with pumas rather than pursuit them, and creating alternative income streams through #regenerativetourism.
One way is to use the rancher’s mules to navigate the rough terrain and deploying camera traps to monitor wildlife in such remote areas.
We recently supported the team on exploration trips to find new suitable locations for the camera trap survey in the Sierra de la Giganta.🫏

Large wilderness areas are needed to allow wildlife to disperse and maintain ecosystem functioning. For the puma, this means finding enough natural prey and connected natural corridors to move around. The Sierras need the pumas to stay intact, and so do the ranchers. 🌵

However, more critical research is needed to better understand how many pumas are roaming the mountains, what are their main diet and how large are prey populations, as well as how human-wildlife conflicts are affecting local ranchers to better prepare mitigation and protection strategies to maintain peaceful coexistence. 📷

A unique and biodiverse mountain range that has been designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, featuring a remarkable contrast of ecosystems. From xeric scrublands and dry forests at lower elevations to oak-pine woodlands at higher altitudes, with large white rock formations and oases following the river basins. These diverse areas are sustained by a combination of elevation, microclimates and seasonal rainfall.
Seasonal streams and springs provide vital water sources, making it the most important hydrological reservoir in the region, supporting both wildlife and local communities.
This and other mountain ranges in Baja California function as islands contrasting the surrounding desert landscapes and are often less impacted by human activities, which has granted them with substantial levels of endemism.

The area of the Gulf of California comprising the stretch from the Bay of Loreto up to Mulegé holds not only a marine National Park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but also rich coastal ecosystems, including several islands, home to endemic species.
Resident marine mammals, sea birds and migratory species, including the largest animal on Earth, the blue whale, are the most known inhabitants of these landscapes, although other terrestrial species such as raccoons or gray foxes are commonly found on the mainland’s coast.
Accesible beaches are quite popular among campers, and it is our responsibility to minimise negative impacts on these fragile ecosystems when we visit to allow natural processes - such as breeding or foraging habits of animals - to continue their course undisturbed. This can be achieved by avoiding driving on the beach or parking at the immediate shoreline, as the waterfront should belong to the wildlife.

Lions used to be found in the wild across most of the African continent, parts of Europe and Asia. Today, they only occupy around 8% of their historical range. Together with elephants and giraffes, they are probably the animal most people think about when asked about African wildlife. Present in different kinds of ecosystems - savannas, forests, grasslands, deserts-they are on top of the food chain. However, habitat loss and fragmentation has forced populations to become smaller and isolated, and killing to prevent livestock loses is also reducing their numbers. Nature conservation at a landscare level is necessary to create safe areas for wildlife, with healthy prey populations and measures in place to minimise human-wildlife conflict, addressing communities’ needs while raising awareness on the role of the species in the ecosystem and the benefits they bring.

During our month in Luambe with @c4c_fund , we started an elephant catalogue of the individuals we encountered in the National Park🐘
The initial document contains pictures of 21 males and 18 females identified by individual characteristics such as ear notches and scars. Tusk length and form can also be used for identification, although these grow and can break, changing their form over an elephant’s lifetime.
These individuals are just a fraction of the population, and the catalogue serves as the start of a work in progress which can be filled in with more information every year. In addition to the photos, recordings of herd composition or the location of the sighting can also be included.
Being able to recognize the elephants allows us to learn about their individual behaviours, which serves as an important tool in an area with high prevalence of human-wildlife conflicts. Also, we can get insights about their movements in the Luangwa Valley across the seasons. All of this can contribute towards elephant conservation efforts.

Communities living in rural areas surrounded by wilderness often come into close contact with wildlife. During our time in Africa and Asia, snakes were often found within human settlements. Killing them as a mean of getting rid of the threat they pose is still a common practice - which is understandable when you want to keep yourself, your family and animals safe - nevertheless, we always tried to implement the “capture and release” method, always with extreme care, help and, when in doubt, treating all snakes as if they were venomous.

Although conservation work is not always being outside in nature and working in breathtaking habitats, it sometimes does come with days spent in the outdoors looking for wildlife or setting up equipment. This may sound ideal, but after walking for 30 km up and down hills, crossing rivers, sliding down muddy slopes and climbing back up with the occasional thorny bush hooked to your clothes and rain wetting your notes, you are quite happy when you finish work and get back to your base for a shower.
In Abel Tasman, we spent some of our days carrying telemetry equipment from one beach to another trying to receive signals from the kākā individuals in the area to find out where they reside during the day and which individuals stay together.

No matter how hard the task, we always feel accomplished and rewarded after a day outside.

For #worldanimalday we want to show you an animal we spent a lot of time with when in the Kalahari. We got to know all the individuals in the reserve thanks to their unique patterns 🦒 You would think giraffes are so big they can’t really hide, but using the drone showed us there were more individuals between the bushes than we had initially seen. For #worldanimalday we want to show you an animal we spent a lot of time with when in the Kalahari. We got to know all the individuals in the reserve thanks to their unique patterns 🦒 You would think giraffes are so big they can’t really hide, but using the drone showed us there were more individuals between the bushes than we had initially seen. This helped when recording herd size and with identification, always making sure the animals were comfortable and relaxed when the drone was nearby 📷

We think education is a priority in conservation, so during our year at @kuzikuswildlifereserve we built this lab which we decorated as a miniature natural history museum with elements from the Kalahari’s natural world 🌾 in the room, researchers and filmmakers can work on their projects and presentations are also carried out for tourists interested in the conservation work happening in the reserve 🦒🦏

The first conservation work we did as a team was in the stunning Abel Tasman National Park, New Zealand 🇳🇿🌿

We were part of @projectjanszoon and helped restore the native flora and fauna of the area. Besides planting over a thousand trees, we monitored native birds and pest species and assisted @docgovtnz in pest control operations.
Our favourite part was staying overnight in the Bark Bay hut to monitor the released kākā population using radio telemetry and camera traps 🦜
